As many of you know, each year I take a moment to reach out to my closest friends and family for a cause that is incredibly important to me—Education First. This wonderful organization provides college scholarships to students from high schools with historically low percentages of college applicants, and offers professional coaching to ensure their success through graduation.
This year, I'm thrilled to share the inspiring stories of two remarkable young women from Morse High School who received scholarships from Education First in 2024.
Barbara faced significant adversity from a young age, yet remained committed to excelling academically, inspired by her father’s sacrifices and unwavering support. Her perseverance earned her a scholarship, and she has now begun her studies at San Diego State University, taking a crucial step toward building a brighter future.
Similarly, Jessica overcame significant challenges growing up between Tijuana and a small village near Oaxaca. Inspired by her mother’s strength in confronting traditional gender roles, she pursued education. Now, Jessica is majoring in Aerospace Engineering at San Diego State University, driven by her passion for space and a commitment to challenging patriarchal norms.
These stories underscore the immense impact that Education First has on young people in our community. By providing access to higher education, we are helping to break the chain of generational poverty.
