Help give our scholars their best chance for success!

Dear Friends, Family and Colleagues,

As many of you know, creating equal access to educational markets is something I feel passionate about. All too often, promising students are forced to forgo a college education due to the high costs of attendence. To that end, I recently ran, and was elected to, the board of Education First, a nonprofit that provides college scholarships and coaching to low-income youth in Portland and beyond. Please join me in making sure our scholars get the support they need to graduate and set the stage for their siblings to follow in their footsteps.

Education First- Portland selected two inspiring students to receive college scholarships - but we are not finished! We want to go beyond financial support and ensure both have access to good counseling throughout their educational journey.

Amada is the youngest of four. Before she even began school, she found herself facing the incarceration of her father. In dealing with this adversity, Amada sought counseling as a method to cope and find strength in herself. Through this experience, Amada was inspired to help others and has decided to pursue a Psychology degree and eventually a masters in Counseling. Amada is determined to go to college and is currently working 4 days a week to help with expenses.

When Hibo was a freshman in high school, her family was issued an eviction notice and forced to leave their family home. Being the strongest english speaker in her family, the responsibility to find a new home fell on Hibo's young shoulders. Hibo was able to find a shelter to take the family in during their difficult time. While at the shelter, Hibo had a startling realization; very few of those inhabiting the shelter attended college. With this awareness, Hibo dedicated herself to obtaining a college degree. Hibo plans to study communications with a minor in social work. She hopes to one day serve as an advocate to families and individuals facing significant life obstacles.
